Der, die, das — Bestimmte Artikel
Every German noun has a grammatical gender: masculine (der), feminine (die), or neuter (das). Gender must be learnt with every noun — it affects articles, adjectives, and pronouns throughout the sentence.
Masculine (der): male people/animals, most -er nouns, days/months/seasons
Feminine (die): female people/animals, nouns ending in -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ion, -tät
Neuter (das): young creatures (das Baby, das Kind), most -chen/-lein diminutives, verbal nouns (das Lernen)
Plural: ALL nouns use die regardless of gender
✅ Always learn: der Hund, die Katze, das Kind — not just Hund, Katze, Kind.
💡 When in doubt, guess die — about 45% of German nouns are feminine. But truly: always learn the article with the noun from day one.
