Learn the tens and how German builds compound numbers — zwanzig, dreißig, all the way to hundert.

Zahlen 20–100 — Numbers 20–100

German compound numbers between 21 and 99 are formed backwards compared to English: twenty-three = dreiundzwanzig (literally 'three and twenty').

Compound Number Rule (21–99)

Formula: [units] + und + [tens]

21 = einundzwanzig (one and twenty)

35 = fünfunddreißig (five and thirty)

67 = siebenundsechzig (seven and sixty)

Note: dreißig (30) is spelled with ß, not dreissig!

ENThe house costs thirty-five euros.

💡 Phone numbers and addresses in Germany are often read in pairs: 43 21 56 → dreiundvierzig, einundzwanzig, sechsundfünfzig. Practise reading numbers in pairs!
