Expressing Contrast with 'obwohl'

Say 'even though' in German: Obwohl es regnet, gehe ich raus. Understand how obwohl flips the expected logic — and why it's so expressive in real conversation.

'obwohl' — Even Though / Although

'obwohl' introduces a surprising contrast. It expresses that something happens DESPITE an obstacle or expectation. Like all subordinating conjunctions, the verb goes to the end.

Was ist ein Kontrast? — What is Contrast?

DeutschEnglish
Obwohl es regnet, gehe ich spazieren.
Even though it is raining, I'm going for a walk.
Ich bin müde, obwohl ich viel geschlafen habe.
I am tired even though I slept a lot.
Obwohl sie krank ist, geht sie arbeiten.
Even though she is sick, she goes to work.
Er lernt Deutsch, obwohl es schwer ist.
He learns German even though it is difficult.
'obwohl' — The Surprise Element

'obwohl' shows unexpected contrast — something happens DESPITE the obstacle

Pattern: Statement 1, obwohl Statement 2 (which would normally prevent Statement 1)

Verb goes to the END of the obwohl-clause

Can be placed at the beginning OR in the middle of the sentence

Formal (Sie)Informal (du)
Expected (weil)
Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil es regnet.
I stay home because it is raining. (logical)
Unexpected (obwohl)
Ich gehe raus, obwohl es regnet.
I go out even though it is raining. (surprising!)

Satzbau — Word Order with 'obwohl'

Obwohlichmüdebin,arbeite ichweiter.
ENAlthough I am tired, I continue working.
Icharbeiteweiter,obwohlichmüdebin.
ENI continue working although I am tired.

Just like 'wenn', when the obwohl-clause comes FIRST, the main clause has INVERSION (verb first).

'obwohl' vs. 'aber' — Both Show Contrast

Formal (Sie)Informal (du)
'obwohl' (subordinating)
Ich gehe raus, obwohl es regnet.
Verb goes to END of obwohl-clause
'aber' (coordinating)
Es regnet, aber ich gehe raus.
Normal word order in BOTH clauses

'aber' connects two equal main clauses. 'obwohl' makes one clause subordinate to the other. Both express contrast, but the grammar is different.

💡 Use 'obwohl' to make your German sound more sophisticated. It shows you can handle complex sentence structures!
